Volcanic Scoria (aka Cinders) is a versatile and effective substrate for freshwater shrimp and other pH sensitive species. Produced naturally from volcanic eruptions over millions of years, Scoria naturally has the perfect properties for freshwater shrimp keeping. Scoria is pH neutral while possessing a huge matrix of porous microscopic internal structures. This matrix gives the Scoria a huge surface area for the colonization of beneficial bacteria which contribute to the conversion of toxic ammonia to harmless elements. Scoria’s colors range from bright red to black with black being the rarest. This dark color is extremely sought after as it contrasts brilliantly with all colored aquatic life and aquarium plants. Use a scraper or ruler to level the surface, or if desired create gradients with the Scoria. Slowly fill your aquarium with water until the water level is about 3-4cm (1-2in) above the Scoria. This makes planting easier. Begin planting your aquarium. Make sure you spray your plants with water until the planting process is completed. Once the aquarium is planted, slowly fill your tank to the desired level. Power up your filter system and allow the water to clear over the next few hours.
