Once assembled, simply place the filter inside your completely empty aquarium, cover it with your choice of gravel, marbles or stones, and then fill it with water. You can also adjust the air flow on the Penn-Plax Smallworld filter kit with the included air valve. The filter cartridge should be replaced every two to four weeks. You may also need to replace your air-stone after some time should you ever notice the airflow becoming sluggish. For safety, always make sure your air pump is above the water level to prevent accidental back-siphoning of water into the pump. This also keeps your tank safe in the event of a loss of power. Additionally, keeping a drip-loop on your air pump’s power cord ensures that your electrical outlet remains dry.
